Who would have thought of seeing the Foo Fighters with the Austin blues greats Jimmie Vaughan and Gary Clarke Jr…but it works when they lay into a killer version of the Fabulous Thunderbirds “Tuff Enough” –

Great to see Jimmie playing in the upper switch position on the strat (the FAT sound) and with a pick – nice change and back to the good ol days of the T-Birds!

Gary Clark Jr is one of those rare, charismatic blues guitar players that you just know has some deep down connection with the universe and at times it comes out in his playing.

Just like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Buddy Guy and all of the greats that take their place at the top of the blues guitar podium, there is a special connection with the universe that touches us all much more than just notes on a fretboard can do.

I felt that same connection watching this Farm Aid 2014 performance from Gary Clark Jr.  – my sense with Gary is that even he doesn’t realize what power he has when he connects truthfully through his instrument…but we do, don’t you agree?

Watch Gary masterfully re-create the wonderful Albert Collins slow blues “If Trouble Was Money”

While he doesn’t have the “Iceman’s” attack (as you can see from video clips below), he brings his own passion and style to the song.

What makes a blues artist stand out is when you know they are giving 110% – we can safely say that of both Albert Collins and Gary don’t you think?

By the way, this song finds its way onto a new Live Double CD from Gary Clark Jr that has some really cool tunes on it, check it out here.

Now here is the Iceman, Albert Collins (Man I gets so pissed that I never was able to see AC live!)

So tell me, what does Texas put in their water that creates so many great blues guitar players?

Actually it isn’t hard to understand when you visit Austin a see the incredible mix of bars, clubs and street musicians – the question becomes, how can you NOT become a musician.

But then, out of this blues mecca comes what everyone is buzzing about…the next great blues guitar legend?  His name is Gary Clark Jr. and yes, he’s the real deal.

He caught the attention of one Eric Clapton ending up as one of the only new guitar players on Crossroad Blue Festival 2010’s line-up – a show certainly to remember up there with Doyle Bramhall II – they tore it up!

Here’s Gary Clark showing his retro shuffle chops with a sweet mix of Chuck Berry, Texas shuffle (a la Vaughan Brothers) and traditional Lightning Hopkins, Freddie King on this version of Shotgun Blues written by Donnie and Hock Walsh of the Downchild Blues Band.

And now for the real test – a slow blues…sounds of BB King mixed with Buddy Guy?

Apparently he is working on a CD that will come out next year – but already generating significant buzz…or as we like to say “paying his dues”

Nice to see that blues is alive and well.
